New AI Generated Songs and Bands are Hitting a Record High on Charts and Popularity in the US… What is the Future of Music?

People don’t notice that AI music is incorporated and used in advertisements, social media, and many other aspects of life, myself included. A few months ago I was listening to “Shackles of Shame” by Blood and Bones, which is a song detailing a woman’s experience with domestic abuse, that I was recommended. After doing some research on them, I found out it was an AI band, and the foundation of all their songs are built with AI tools. The lead singer, “Luna”, has vocals that are fully AI-generated. The interesting thing about the band itself is that they spend a lot of time making sure the lyrics and vocals are emotionally convincing. The band discusses various heavy topics such as war, inequality, mental illness, and domestic abuse,  which lead to many people feeling upset that an emotionless system is “singing” about such controversial topics.

A more widely known song “I Run”, has recently been trending on social media. Haven’s track “I Run,”  has been featured in thousands of videos on multiple platforms and has gotten over 40 million streams on Spotify. The track was released by UK producer Harrison Walker under the name Haven. Walker has said the vocals are actually his own, but heavily manipulated through “layers of processing and filtering” until they’re unrecognizable. Since then, people have accused the song of being entirely AI-generated, and currently it’s going through the process of being removed from major streaming services, including Spotify and Apple Music. It begs the question of if AI is okay to use in the music industry or not.

Another infamous band is Velvet Sundown, who released two entire albums before admitting that their music, images, and backstory were all created by AI. Their band went viral, having more than 1 million streams on Spotify in a matter of weeks. But, when someone describing himself as a “member of the band”, told reporters that Velvet Sundown had not used AI and that the news being spread was an “art hoax”, (which was later proven untrue), caused many fans to be skeptical of the group and the rumors of AI usage. Some music industry insiders say that streaming sites should be legally obliged to tag music created by AI so consumers can make informed decisions about what they are listening to.

Artists using AI is a very hot topic, especially with it becoming extremely realistic as technology progresses. Again, it is a very prevalent idea that it should be illegal to not specify that music was AI-generated since many people are against it and don’t want to support it. In my opinion, I believe people have a right to know what they’re listening to and where it came from.
