Winter Concert at BHS

On the 18th of February, a concert was held in the theater by the BHS music department. I personally have never been to a school concert before and I was really impressed, the song selections as well as the execution of these technically difficult songs was honestly amazing and I was surprised that you could see it for free.   The concert was split up by sections, the Jazz band introduced with “Chitlins Con Carne” by Kenny Burrell. With the guidance of both Chris Beasley as Conductor and William Perkins as the band’s president the instrumentation was beautifully played and was a great prelude for the rest of the show. Following the Jazz Band was the Red Band, Conducted by Matthew Bruneau. Unlike the former, the Red band composed of songs with both lyrics and instrumentation. I was completely blown away by the vocalists, Ashley Van Valkenburg and Gabe Landies in “Sweet Home Chicago,” A blues-inspired tune written by Robert Johnson. An additional stand out performance was “Air on the G string,” by J.S. Bach. This piece was executed by the String Orchestra, again conducted by Mr. Bruneau, and was beautifully performed. The last band to perform was the concert band; playing instrumentals from the popular Disney musical, “Beauty and the Beast,” as well as “Pirates of the Caribbean.” I honestly felt I was watching these two movies when listening to the music, it was so perfectly done.

The concert overall was fantastic and I definitely recommend paying attention to your emails for future performances held at the school, again its free and is a perfect few hour experience that’s completely worth your time.
