During intersession days, students participated in a variety of activities, allowing students to explore new experiences or delve deeper into their interests. One in particular helped to create a wildflower garden outside spanning over the entirety of intersession. Students ripped up grass, shoveled dirt, and planted an array of wildflowers. Led this year by Mrs. Morissey, Mrs. Hinsvark, and Mrs. Colburn, with the scientific spark made from the embers of Mrs. Morissey and Mr. Blahnik who attempted a lesser version of the wild flower project the previous year. In order to build up the program, according to Mrs. Colburn, the teachers obtained the resources necessary for such a large endeavor from generous donations including Amherst Earth which gave 50% off on loam/soil, Bedford Fields which donated wildflower seeds, House by the Side of the Road which gave us 20% off plants, Coast of Maine which donated 10 bags of loam/soil and of course the eleven students that completed 8 hours of community service.
The project is intended to run over the course of the next four years, with the dream of replacing the entire hill acting as a path from the junior lot to the school with a wildflower garden. The project along with its beautifying of the campus will be incorporated into cooking classes and biology/environmental science classes, providing cooking classes with fresh edible flowers and plants to be used in their culinary pursuits, a place for biology classes to plant grown in class, and provide students with a visualization of the environmental science in the backyard of their school. The BHS community is truly grateful for the hard work and dedication of the teachers and students that help make this project a reality.
