“Musicology is a very open and inclusive field of academic inquiry, It’s no longer just about considering the notes on the page, but rather about how the music affects the world around us.”
-Dr. Ryan Bañagale, Associate Professor and Chair of Music at Colorado College
Musicology is the study and analysis of music, and this club allows you time during the school day to talk about songs you and other people in the club find interesting, symbolic, and/or says something more than its literal meaning. Of course, you can take your analysis as far or as simple as you want, as discussions during club meetings can add more to your initial interpretations of a song, or even give you a completely new perspective of a meaning of a lyric.
The club started earlier this January, and we have already analyzed two songs over the past two weeks. Club meetings happen during Advisory A on Tuesdays, in room 206. We have a Google classroom, where you can recommend songs/music for next week.
This club is a combination of efforts from Gray Laird, Alishbah Baloch, and Hannah Laird. They organize everything each week and they lead club discussions, they’re really good at keeping the club fun and interesting. The club is planning in a few weeks to organize a bracket tournament; club members get to vote on which song is the “best” in their genre.
If you like music, to analyze/talk about music, or discover new music, then you should consider joining this club, we’re always welcome to new members and new perspectives to keep the discussions interesting!
