Expectations – A Poem

I

Wanted to be happy

Wanted to be loved

Wanted to be held

And let go like a dove

Held in one’s hands

Embraced by one’s arms

Prized and protected

Enchanted by charms

But all I got

Was sorrowful pain

Hope that was lost

And love that was

Never meant to be

Choked with the hatred

That lived in those arms

The eyes of the snake

Engulfed by the flames

Was all that was

Waiting for me
