Highlights from the 2025 Emmy Awards

The Emmy awards were first held in 1949 to recognize creativity and excellence in the film industry, specifically T.V. series. The awards include categories for lead actors, actresses, supporting casts, writing, and directing for a series in each genre. Over its 77 years of history, the amount of awards have increased and its popularity has grown to global fame, with the Emmys widely recognized as one of the highest honors in motion picture.

This year the 77th Emmy awards were held on September 14th at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles, California. The show was broadcast live on CBS and was hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze. Severance led the shows with 27 total nominations across all categories, followed closely by The Studio with 23. Other popular nominees included, The Penguin, The White Lotus, and Hacks. Although the biggest winner of the awards was Apple TV+, as they had a personal record of 81 Emmy nominations across 14 series, as well as HBO Max and Netflix making noteworthy performances with 30+ wins.

In the drama category, medical drama The Pitt upset the heavy favorite Severance for Outstanding Drama Series, along with Outstanding Lead Actor being awarded to Noah Wyle for his significant role in the series. Of course Severance didn’t leave the category empty handed as Britt Lower won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress, for her performance as Helly R.

For the comedy awards, The Studio won Outstanding Comedy Series and Seth Rogen won 4 awards, making him the most successful person of the night for his acting, producing, directing, and co-writing. To end it off, Jean Smart claimed her fourth Outstanding Lead Actress for her role in Hacks, a comedy-drama series that follows the complicated relationship between a legendary comedian and her young comedy writer.

Anthology Series Adolescence created the most buzz online, thanks to Owen Cooper, who won his first Outstanding Supporting Actor award. At just 15 years old, Cooper became the youngest to ever win the award. The show’s innovative strategy involved filming entire episodes in a single continuous take, captivating audiences and fans alike. As Adolescence rose in popularity throughout the year, Cooper’s debut role made headlines, earning himself multiple Emmy nominations.
