Inside a Severed Mind: Work vs. Life

Home-work life balance is a virtue for many, but at what point is it too far? The psychological thriller, Severance, created by Dan Erikson, dives deep into what borders the morality of this separation at its highest extremity. The American Television series that first premiered in 2022 is set in a dystopian society where working a high classified job at a mysterious biotechnology company called Lumon entails a permanent and brain altering procedure called severance. The surgery includes the insertion of an implant into the bottom of the brain and causes the recipient to relinquish any and all memories of their home life while in the work space and vice versa; the “Innie” or worker therefore forms a deviated personality in which they dictate while the “Outie” is an entirely separate entity.

Macro Data Refinement workers Mark S., Dylan G., and Irving B. are joined by a replacement of their friend Petey K. named Helly R, a rebellious new “Innie”. Juggling between staying out of trouble as head of his department and investigating to uncover the hidden secrets of his company, Mark S. as an “Outie” must manage his own personal griefs and weigh out his motivators to pursue his position he hardly even knows about.

The first season with nine episodes released to Apple TV, has recently been joined by episode one of the second season as of January 19th and is set to be followed by the next episode on January 24th. Anticipation takes over for many avid watchers as the dates are set for the rest of season two to be fully pressed out by March 21st 2025 and consist of ten total episodes. As of April 2023, it has been reported that production hired Beau Willimon, famous for his work on House of Cards, as an executive for the latest season and possibly for the prospective third.
