Although the BHS Red Cross Club is new to the high school this year, they have generated lots of success through their various events and fundraisers. The club’s goal is to carry out the mission of the American Red Cross through initiatives such as fundraising, preparedness activities, and blood drives.
The Red Cross Club has recently concluded its sock fundraiser, which allowed them to vaccinate a village in a low-income area, give back to our local community, and generate greater support for their club. After selling 78 pairs of socks for $10 per pair, they raised a grand total of $780; this money will be used to provide Measles and Rubella vaccinations for 350 people internationally. In addition, for each pair of socks that were sold, a pair was also donated to Families in Transition, a nonprofit organization based in Manchester that is committed to preventing and breaking the cycle of homelessness. It’s important to note that socks are actually one of the most in-demand products among those who are in need.
Although the Red Cross Club is new to Bedford, they have made a big impact on both a local and international level. According to junior officer Safiye Yasan, the club has generated “great success” and “are looking forward to doing greater things and helping more people”.
