Spirit Week at BHS

Homecoming spirit week brought a wave of energy and color to the halls of BHS this year as students showed off their school pride. From creative theme-day outfits to the electric vibes of the end of week pep-rally, every part of the school was lit up with excitement and liveliness. The week wasn’t just about dressing up in fun outfits; it was about coming together as a community to celebrate tradition, friendship, and school spirit.

The week started off strong with America Monday, where students of all grade levels showed up to class in their red, white, and blue. One freshman shared that they “liked America Day because I liked getting to use paint and dress up in colors.” The freshman class went all out with showing off their American spirit, using face paint, wearing tutus, and flaunting America themed cowboy hats. Another student shared that “a lot of people participated so that was fun!”

Tracksuit Tuesday was a hit all around,. Honoring Mrs. Hatzidakis and Dr. DeRosa’s Tuesday tradition of wearing colorful, festive tracksuits. In an interview Mrs. Hatzidakis shared the touching story of the creation and spread of Tracksuit Tuesday, along with how honored she and her co-founder Dr. DeRosa was when they heard Tracksuit Tuesday would be included in spirit week. Hatzidakis shared in an interview that she would like everyone to know that the rules for Tracksuit Tuesday are made to be inclusive and non-intimidating to all. She shared the rules with us, saying that “You don’t need to spend money, the top and bottom they have to match, the more aggressive the matching the better, the bottoms have to have an elastic waistband. Then you’re happy and good to go.” Hatzidakis shared on behalf of herself and Dr. DeRosa that they appreciated that people made such a big effort to join in and show their spirit for their treasured tradition.

Pink Out on Wednesday may have been the most popular day out of the whole week. Junior Abby Conway shared in an interview that “people did good on Pink Out” and that “[it] was probably the most dressed up day.” It’s not just the Plastics from Mean Girls who wear pink on Wednesdays, but also the whole of BHS as well. The whole school showed up spectacularly in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Have you ever wondered what it would look like to see Frat Guys and Greek Gods in one room? Well, visiting BHS on Old Greek vs. New Greek day would display that spectacularly. Many people were dressed up in Socrates-esque attire, wearing togas and laurel wreaths galore. For the New Greek part of this Spirit Week Day, there were frat members left and right, and they really embodied a true perspective of fraternity life. An anonymous senior stated how she thought that “a lot of people dressed up, which made the energy levels of the day be really high”, and she also stated that “it was funny to see everyone decked out in togas and also backwards baseball caps and undone ties”.

The energy on Pep Rally Day is always up. People love representing their class, and people especially love pep rallies. BHS students often describe class colors day as their favorite and “a dub”. The atmosphere is always great at the pep rallies, and everyone is ready to have a lot of fun. The pep rallies are also organized very well, and students thought that it was “really fun to watch and [that] the events looked really fun”. Students love all the games, especially classics like tug-of-war and broomball. The student council even introduced a new game this year- pizza box knockout. This electrifying game, even with its strange name, was “odd but fun”.

Homecoming day might be one of the most-awaited days of the entire school year. Everyone’s energy is ramped up from last night’s football game win, and BHS students are always excited to dance around and have fun. Students often look forward to being able to “dress up and hangout with [my] friends”. BHS always shows up spectacularly at school events, with homecoming being no exception. One of the main highlights of the night was being able to see many students dressed up and having fun on the dance floor. However, one piece of constructive criticism that many anonymous students said referred to the DJ not playing “more familiar songs”. Students, while they thought the song choices were good, would have appreciated more popular tunes.
